Watcher of the Dead (aka Book IV)

Have your say on A Cavern of Black Ice, A Fortress of Grey Ice and A Sword From Red Ice.

Watcher of the Dead (aka Book IV)

I thought we might as well have a thread for the title of the new book.

What does everyone think?

I was expecting another "Sword from..." type of a title, but this one works for me, too.
Something clever will go here eventually, simple as that.

I have to say I like it! It conjures up powerful, ominous images in my mind's eye. It's certainly something of a departure too. Not just from the previous titles, but because it reaches out beyond the genre.

I like it too! The title hints that we should be hearing a lot from Raif in this book. Though, at this point, I think we are getting to the point where things are going to start revolving around him pretty heavily anyway now that he is the leader of the maimed men and now has the sword and the knowledge of what must be done.

It is a powerful title. Personally I'd like the "ice" theme to continue.. but how many more colors could there be? I mean, sure, there could be a blue, green or pink..ah who are we kidding, it'd get silly

I'll say that naturally I will scramble to get the book as soon as in any way possible once its out and as such, the title is not a primary concern but if I were a newcomer to the series, a title such as "Watcher of the Dead" would absolutely draw my attention while cruising a bookshelf.

Its a good pick. ..besides, someone has an army to kill! Get to work mister!

I think this one is a hard one to pick without knowing the central theme of the next book. Keeping in mind the "ice" theme, all title so far are either objects or places that Raif and / or Ash need to either get or get to. (if that sentence made any sense...)

So what do we have to work with. Yes - Raif needs to go forth and kill an army. We also have the shattering of the stone, the missing lore and JVJ has suggested that a good bit of the next book will deal with Clan Grey. So I don't know - I'm sort thinking along the lines of "A stone from cursed ice" Really depends on what Raif and Ash are up to...

Fun to speculate though.

good name - I like it. I think it a good choice too because i think Raif will really come into his own in this book. In Cavern, he was just discovering he could kill, in Fortress, he claimed his name during that shoot off with Tanjo and in Sword he got his weapon, so I am hoping Watcher of the Dead means that Raif has now really become Watcher of the Dead, accepted his role and is about to unleash destruction on the endlords.

My guess though is that he'll be more solitary than ever in this book - I think that people will start to realise who he is and what he can do and perhaps he'll be more revered than he currently is, but it is lonely at the top.

I also think that Ash will become the "sacred warrior" that the Reach is meant to be in the book, and that will work well for setting up the final battle (or show down) in the last book. (There are going to be five books - right?)

Witchary .. I like the "Stone from Cursed Ice" .. fantastic!

Watcher Of The Dead is pretty chilling, yeah. Lots of foreshadowing in a couple of words :).
Death smiled as she withdrew. Kill an army for me, Raif Sevrance. Any less and I just might call you back.

I'll second that, "cursed ice" would make a good title as well :)
Can't go wrong with Raif's favourite (ha..yea right) title but I like that alot!
Though personally I sorta kinda want a room of sleeping ice..where I can hibernate until the book is out

Ahhh, I had no idea this was the "actual" title for the fourth book. Nice { slaps forehead }. Also nice to see, after catching up on JVJ's journal, that the quote I have loved so much since Cavern _is_ still important :).

Cool title, very cool though it does depart from the whole 'ice' theme which will take some getting used to but whatever...I just want the book!

love the title, love the quote from death. I'm hoping that the army for Raif to kill will be erupting up out from the Rift in the book - in fact I think there might be a sort of all roads lead to the Rift thing happening. You already have Raif there with Cluff Drybannock and his Sullish Bluddsmen on the other side of it. I mentioned on the Cassie board that I wouldn't be surprised if she showed up there looking for her cousin, and also Sarga Veys since the power of the creatures of the Void was something that was "worthy of Sarga Veys" - where better for him to go to try and serve them than the the fault in the earth that will be the worst to give?

I know "Watcher of the Dead" is Raif's title but it's apparent that he is destined to do more than just watching. The title seems to be a bit passive when you consider his talents and destiny to kill the (un)dead wraiths and Endlords.

As a book title though it certainly will be eye-catching.
It would have been great if the 'Ice' theme continued as the major climate in the book is sub-arctic.

yeh i always thought there could be a 'blue ice' or 'white ice' esp since there was a sort of gradiation from black ice to grey ice i thought white might make an appearance as a title.
