Watcher of the Dead (aka Book IV)

Have your say on A Cavern of Black Ice, A Fortress of Grey Ice and A Sword From Red Ice.

I wasn't sure what to make of the new title... it sounded cool enough, it's just that I'm a creature of symmetry, and I liked the the idea of more "...[x-coloured] Ice" theme that J V Jones had going.

I take the point of someone who previously wrote that there are only so many coloured ices she can come up with, but still... I guess it's all because, previously, it was only meant to be a trilogy, right? So, I guess once it became obvious that the books were going to take longer than three editions, JVJ had to come up with more titles!

Am I sad for still wanting Ash and Raif to - somehow - get together? Going from the Book of Words, the protagonist never got the girl, in the end... I hope that Raif finds a happier ending in this story :).

Although I'm not expecting Raif and Ash to get together in the end, it would be nice. :)
Something clever will go here eventually, simple as that.

I think "Watcher of the dead" is a perfect name for book IV.
To me, it sounds like Raif has come to grips with what he was put in this world to accomplish. He doesn't have to like it, but as they say in this world....'it is what it is'.

As for book V and, if applicable, book VI, perhaps "Days Darker than Night" might be an appropriate name for one of them, who knows. After reading several of JV's postings and a few interviews, I'd surmise that it's too far out in the future to even begin considering. JV's MO seems to be that she sets up the people, places and things, with incredible detail, and then, as she says, "let the story write itself".

I'm about 245 pages into A Sword from Red Ice and can't put the thing down. I'm not a fast reader by any means, but the only books I recall reading at the pace I'm going through Red Ice, were the Barbed Coil and maybe Deception Point (Dan Brown). As I recall, State of Fear (Michael Chrichton), was tough to put down, also.

I don't know why this thread popped into my head now, but I had a thought:

"Watcher of the Dead on Ice" - I don't know why but it seemed terribly funny to me

Raif is teleported to modern times, Barbed Coil style, where he works in a morgue and communicates with the recently deceased. With his postmortem information, he tracks down the killers of his "cold tenants". It might need some tweaking, but it could work.....

Good one Dleerious, LOL.

Or how about he works as a papparazzi assigned to take pictures of Amy Winehouse and her dying career. PLus it could be reality TV.

The only problem is that as much as I love JVJ, she aint the speediest of writers. Could well be that by the time it's released, I'll have lost my eyesight! Don't even begin to think about book 5 Thrud69.

I love it...but then, I've only just finished reading A Sword from Red Ice &, I guess from association with The Book of Words, I assumed the series was a trilogy and when it finished I was like, WHAT!!! but, but, but...so I'm just SO HAPPY that there's another book it could be called anything right now. :D

I'm hearing what you guys are saying about the ice theme. Nevertheless, it feels like there might be a kind of shift in the story or something. All the pieces are in place now, so maybe the different theme reflects this.
