Sorry!

As I'm sure you've noticed, this board has recently undergone a minor transformation. The software platform on which it operates has been updated. While this upgrade is intended to improve the user experience, it is also having some negative effects. Chief amongst these is a raft of automated emails (spam) recently posted to many users.
If you received one of these "Come back to the forum" messages - just ignore it. The rogue feature responsible for the problem has now been disabled. The last thing we want to do is to pressure our visitors in any way.

Some settings were lost, is this correct?

Not as far as I'm aware. The new software does add to and extend the number of settings in some areas. There are now more options in the User Control Panel for example. This makes it difficult to do a like-for-like comparison with settings from the old software.
It's a shame about the avatars, though.

The main thing was the missing avatars (I posted here before reading your other post concerning the update, sorry for that); without avatars, I find boards almost unreadable.
I could have sworn I had a signature before, but that is not that critical.
What really bugs me is that the user information belonging to a post is on the right side. I have been using message boards for six years now and got used to finding avatar and username on the left hand side (perhaps it is even more intuitive for us left-to-right-readers). Is this a theme issue? I cannot find a setting to change it back for me.

Yeah, I'm with you on the info-justification thing. It's like we're all driving on the wrong side of the road.
It is a theme-related issue. The one we're using here is the default. It's exactly how the developers want things to look. It would be nice to create our own theme, but we could only do that if we hosted the board on our server.

Oh, I never realized you don't! Why is that? Maintaining a board is not that hard, I think.
If you pay 7$/month, even those free forum guys will let you install themes (or maybe even do it for you?). Perhaps you can also buy a single installation?
It's like we're all driving on the wrong side of the road.
Maybe island folk gained majority in the phpbb development team.

I’m new to this page but very frustrated nonetheless. JV's page lack basic information (the kind that people really care about) like when is the #@$%&#$ date for the Watcher of the Dead book on libraries!!!! I don’t remember what I did last time that I came across a date that it said somewhere mid May 2009....never happened. Nothing personal JV but the measure that I care about your life is directly related to the books of yours that I can read.

What? Who? Seriously if you are going to complain about release dates, at least pick the appropriate thread.

Welcome to the board, laralds. As Witchary has pointed out, you're off topic here. If you had started a new thread you would have probably received a quicker response.

Publication dates are seldom absolute. It's therefore unwise to even speculate about them. That said, JV has been posting progress of her work on
Twitter and recently remarked: "Hopefully Watcher of the Dead, Book IV in the series will be published in Spring 2010."
So there you have it.

The reason we're not hosting the board is because we don't have enough room on our server. We have considered hiring additional server space, but we're not convinced it's the right move just yet. It's not easy to get a copy of the board's database either.
