On the subject of what JV said...

I’d have to utterly agree: Halo is the pinnacle of First Person Shooters, hands down. (Not that those exact words were used.) A good portion of my life was spent on that game and the sequels, i.e., Halo 2 and Halo 3. I competed in a number of local LAN competitions for Halo 1, but when Halo 2 was released I was extremely disappointed, finding it coming up short in every comparative way to its predecessor. Halo 3 on the other hand was a fine piece of work. Maybe it doesn’t have the same curse inducing effects on you and your friends as Halo: CE, but it's definitely cause for an occasional post mortem desecration. Forgive my nostalgia for Halo 1: Backpack Reload, Double Melee, portal killing, grenade jumping, oh and let’s not forget blowing weapons to you via grenades on such classics like Damnation, Chill Out, Hang ’Em High, etc.

As for Doom, that was one of the first for me.

I loves me some Haloz. Just tried out the new maps last night. I actually thought H2 was the best of the series, but mostly because I spend most of my time in multiplayer with friends, and H2 revolutionalized the way online console games should be played, with their excellent party and matchmaking system. H3 is great, but it's not revolutionary quite like H2 was.

Call of Duty 4 is also addicting as heck due to its RPG twist (unlocks, prestige levels, challenges, perks, etc.). Other than that I am playing a little Chromehounds and Burnout Paradise.

If anyone wants to look me up on the 360, my gamertag is "OCD Mojo". I am also a member of a website for mature gamers, geezergamers.com.

I Think I'm also a bit 'Old School'. Shoot 'em Ups to me always conjure images of horizontal scrollers like Gradius, Parodius, R-Type, Pulstar or vertical scrollers like SWIV, Super Aleste, 1943 etc. :)

Last run and gun I played was BioShock on the 360 which had a really great atmosphere to it, I love it. I also still play Doom 2 and Shadow Warrior (Who want some Wang!).

Has anyone played Portal? It's not a conventional shooter, but I desperately want to give it a go. Listen to the "Still Alive" song from the end credits on youtube. The game sounds awesome.

Plus, Left 4 Dead has been recommended to me. Proper multi-player co-op. Fantastic. If only I had an adequate broadband connection!

I have this big rant that i go into about Halo I. I won't subject you to it, but lets just suffice to say that originally Halo I was in development for the PC only, and when microsoft developed the XBOX, they bought out bungie and made the game xbox only in order to boost xbox sales. Obviously not a bad business policy, but it certainly irked us PC gamers who had ben following the game for the better part of 2 years.

Either way. Doom of course is a classic. I have a hilarious story about Doom II actually. Way back when i used to use my 14.4 modem to dial into my buddies modem and we would play Doom II on co-op through the single player campaign. Tons of fun. The story is that to this day, my best friend absolutely refuses to take point whenever we play an FPS, because way back when, i used to accidentally shoot him in the back in Doom II, because the game wasnt advanced enough to be able to aim above or below someone. So if the demon was on a ledge or something above him, i couldnt shoot at it if he was in front of me.

I don't play FPS much anymore. I still like to get on CS:S every once in a while and participate in the favored american past time of shooting terrorists in the face, and Team Fortress 2 can be fun at times as well for a more light hearted gaming experience.

I have to agree with some above posters though. I must be old school as hell b/c when JVJ said "shoot em ups", i immediately had memories of sitting on the couch playing Contra, and stuffing doughnuts down my face lol.

You....dont....have....broadband....???!!!?!?!!!

This is blasphemy....this is madness!

From what i am told, portal was really really good, but really really short. My roommate finished it in under 3 hours, but he said it was 3 hours of awesomeness.

I really really want to play L4D but i'm super broke atm. Probably be a couple more weeks before i can pick it up. /grumble.

I do have Broadband, courtesy of BT, but it's rubbish. We pay for up to 8mb and currently get an absolute maximum of 500k- it's because we moved house and BT thought it was a great idea to rip off those people stuck on a long contract. Suffice to say that they will soon be losing our custom and that I will hopefully have a reasonable connection speed in the near future. In some ways, though, not being able to play has been a good thing, because I haven't spent al hours of the day battling away...

I don't mind if it's short, so long as the price reflects that. I hope Episode 3 is worth the wait.

Wonder if JVJ has ever thought about writing for games?

Reviving an old thread here, but this is quite an interesting read, so I thought I would share it...

Thats a pretty good list Di, but there are a few that I think should have made that list like the first "Master of Orion" the game that invented turn based space strategy.

Wing Commander Series, very influential games.

the first Warcraft, sure Dune 2 inventer the RTS, but Warcraft perfected it, also Starcraft should be there as well.

For silly games how about "Burger Time" getting chased by psychotic pickles, doesnt get much better than that.

I fully agree Starcraft should be there!

well, this forum is long dead, but i think i'll give my opinion anyway. There are a few storylines in the gaming world that beat all the others. I couldnt tell you in what order they are, because all of them are great. Anyway, they are half-life, metal gear solid, halo, and resident evil. doom almost makes the list, but not quite.
