Despite Summer being over a month away, the Summer Movie Season is in full special-effect! Which movies are you excited about and what do you think of what you've seen so far?



I thought Iron Man was really cool, I didn't like Speed Racer much but I found it visually stunning, and Prince Caspian was... okay.

I'm really looking forward to the new Indiana Jones movie and the next Batman movie, Dark Knight. Plus there's that new Star Wars animated movie that comes out in August which looks like fun, too.

I don't go out to the movies much these days, though its not nearly as expensive for me than it is in the states where a coke costs about as much as the ticket itself I guess I just don't like a bunch of random people making noise or blocking my view. Its gotta be either a really special thing, or I get dragged along to go..else I just wait for a dvd release. But in essence, it won't change the issue of your post, so...

I actually did see Iron Man, I actually did enjoy it but then, I like Marvel.
To be honest I don't even really know what else will hit the movies this year but I'm definitely interested in the Batman movie cause Batman Begins was really cool and I think Christian Bale makes a good Batman.

I don't have too much interest in Indiana Jones, other than nostalgia. Mind you I liked the first three and this one has good starpower behind it and I like Harrison Ford. I just feel its way too late. It feels like he is too old for that role now. /shrug, maybe I'll be proven wrong.

No interest in Speed Racer, low interest in Caspian (even tho I like fantasy movies, its just not grasping me too much) and though I love Star Wars, I don't even know about that animated movie and whether or not I wanna see it depends highly on the drawing style.

Anything else.. I honestly don't know.

Can't wait to see Indi! Growing up I had the biggest crush on Indiana Jones. Good old fashioned adventure classics.

If it's Sci-Fi I'll watch it. No matter how bad! As a closet Trekkie (damn I was trying to keep that secret ), I'm looking forward to the new film they're making. That's still a year away though.

Indiana Jones? What can I say...he's a close relative. I liked the original and the third outing, but the Temple of Doom sucked like a vacuum! I'm sure the new film will be a big improvement on that.

Dark Knight is a definite. Iron Man rocked. Good comic book movies are just awesome. Bad comic book movies .. urg.

Waiting to see Will's (Smith) new "superhero" movie, looks pretty funny.

Ahh, you watched the film when you were just 13. That's the problem. Despite the odd gory moment and the grand scale, I thought it was just a little too shallow and juvenile.

I am a firm fan of the Mummy franchise as well.
Though I will miss Rachel Weisz not being part of the third installment. Apparently she was unable to do so due to her most recent pregnancy. Very understandable.

That Hellboy 2 looks spectacular. It is done by the fella from Pan's Labyrinth which was beautifully made.

And as far as Dr. Jones is concerned I'm more looking forward to the Lego based video game of his movie going adventures.
I've always considered Lego awesome, but when they entered into the movie to game adaptations my love just grew and grew and grew...

I've seen Wall-E. That was a good movie.

I'm looking forward to Batman: The Dark Knight. It looks like it'll be awesome.

These days I usually wait for a movie to come out on DVD unless it looks like it absolutely needs a big screen (panoramic scenery shots). I saw Prince Caspian on the big screen. That was worth the cost of the ticket.

I thought Ironman was ok, not great.

Mongol wasn't what I expected at all- I like foreign language films and independent films, but this was a love story. I mean, come on, this is Gengis Khan we're talking about! Instead it was a love story. Well shot, but a disappointment.

Angelina Jolie is pretty fine, and it was fun if you ignored its petty stupidities. There were many of them.

I'd like to see The Dark Knight. Really looking forward to it in fact. I thought the first film was superb, and it has an excellent director in Christopher Nolan. I also have a high opinion of Christian Bale. So I hope it doesn't let me down.

Hellboy 2. I thought the first was a bit rubbish, but some of the character design looks to be inspired by Pan's Labarinth, and it seems to possess a sense of humour.

I also relish martial arts movies, so the Forbidden Kingdom, too. It has only just come out in the UK.

Personally, I prefer going to the cinema. For me there's more of a sense of occasion, more grandeur, it seems more of an event than watching it at home.

Red_Phobos, have you seen Shi mian mai fu (House of Flying Daggers)? Yes it is a bit of a love story, but more than that, it is a great story with fabulous matial art scenes.

I was going watch Mongol, but I might wait for the dvd release now that I read your post.

Tell me, do you like Jacky Chan movies? I think I have watched every single one.

I agree Witchary, House of Flying Daggers is fantastic.
Along with Hero, The Warrior, Warriors of Heaven And Earth, Curse of The Golden Flower and Shinobi: Heart Under Blade to name a few.
Most really good Hong Kong related cinema has an undertone of romance along with life lesson learning and amazing action.
They like to run the gambit when making an epic film.
And then on the side of great FX and action but silly humor is Kung Fu Hustle.
Gots to love Stephen Chow.

And I have to agree with you on the first Hellboy, kind of a silly tongue-in-cheek take. It's amazing to see what can be done with a different director at the helm but still utilizing the same basic characters.

This is the second time I've written this post because I lost the first one due to a server problem. Grrr. I can't escape the feeling that the lost original was far better. Nevermind!

Anyway. I have seen House of Flying Daggers, but -and I dislike being contrary, though I frequently am- I didn't really like it very much. Although it is cinematically and aesthetically pleasing on the eye, the narrative was a big let down. Like Hero, the plot failed to convince me, and as well as the slightly convoluted love story, it all felt a bit melodramatic.
However, I do feel everyone interested in films ought to see one or the other. They're gorgeous, sumptuous, whatever superlative you want to use. But HoFD felt far too similar to Hero for my liking. If I'm honest, I prefer Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to both of them.

I wish to stress that Mongol isn't a bad film, but one that wasn't what I expected. At all. Watching the film did make me think of JVJ's world, because of the harsh landscape of the great plains, and well drinking horse blood, etc. So watch it on DVD, and let me know what you think.

I do like Jackie Chan films, though I must admit that I haven't seen a huge proportion of his catalogue. I love his originality, and the sheer physical courage he's displayed (ie stunts) during his career is stupendous. I can find his movies a little goofy though- sometimes I want some darkness! Stephen Chow's Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer are wonderfully eccentric films. When is he going to do some more?!

On a final note, Zatoichi (2004) is an excellent martial-arts offering, idiosyncratic and funny, as well as possessing a bit of depth. Anyone seen District 13?

Ahem. To go back to the future (albeit distant), I'm already eager to see The Hobbit when it's finally released, even though it will apparently be in two parts!
