What is the Hail Wolf?

In the prologue to ASfRI, Inigar Stoop hears and recognises the call of the Hail Wolf returning to Blackhail.
Mace Blackhail has the clanwives sewing the Hail Wolf emblem into badges for the warriors to wear. It is also hinted that the clan had worn the emblem in the past but was forced to abandon it after Ayan Blackhail killed a Dhoone king with an arrow.

Here's my theory.

After the stone gods shattered the guidestone and left Blackhail the Hail Wolf returned home from exile.
Maybe the Hail Wolf was the original god of the Blackhail clan before the stone gods became predominant in the clanholds.

My other thought was that the Hail Wolf was present in that piece of guidestone that Raina smuggled into the under cellars of the roundhouse.
When she slept next to it after Anwyn's death it invested her with anger and purpose to be rid of Stanning Beade and the Scarpe guidestone.

Your views on this theory would be welcome.

Huh good thinking...I never even thought about this, dumb person that I am, I just assumed that the Hail Wolf was Mace in a way, and that he was returning...I dunno...I think I'm wrong though now that I've read your possible theories.

Just something I noticed recently while looking at the map page from Red Ice.
The illustration inside the compass symbol is a wolf with a dagger in its mouth. Could this represent the Hail Wolf with Dagro Blackhail's dagger?

I rushed through my read of Red Ice. Will have to go carefully on the re-read.

The Hail Wolf is such an evocative title. And yeah, my gut says it's not Mace, even though that is an obvious looking assumption.

I like the idea about a god being outcast and returning AFTER the breaking of the Hailstone. That is a really cool idea. Kudos Mariner!

It is told Blackhail as a clan was a war faring clan once, especially battling Doone as hell. I think "The Hail Wolf returns" can be read as a metaphor that peace is over and Blackhail will hunt again - not in the clannish skirmishing way but in the all-or-nothing hell-may-care way.
