Does anyone have any idea how much time has passed during the series so far?

I only ask because there is a lot of travelling done, and then suddenly it seems as if time sort of jumps and everything starts happening again and as a consequence I have no real idea of how much time is passing or how far people are travelling. I notice that Ash seems to travel for weeks through what seems to be a relatively small area on the map, while Raif covers what looks like a larger distance in seemingly the same time.

Is it just a case of dramatic speed?

I've been sort of wondering the same thing as I re-read book two. Personally, I think we are looking at about 10 months of time having gone by. I see the story having started in the early fall, what we think of as September or October. Now it seems to me we've hit mid summer by the end of book three.
The other thing that gets to me is where exactly the Rift, and the rift city lies in relation to the badlands and the want. If you compare things to the maps in the book it would seem like the Great want is really not that big. Which, I suppose could be the case since its more of a state of flux than a state of concrete reality.

It actually is about to be spring time (starting in book 4) but beyond that, I honestly don't recall the timeframe things started out at in Black Ice, it has been too long since I've read that Wink A year maybe, according to your mentioned timeframe? I do recall Effie going from an 8 to a 9 year old as well.

I probably should begin a new thread for this train of thought, but this seems as good a place as any to start. I just finished Book of Words and I'm trying to figure out how long after does Sword of Shadows take place? If I'm correct, comparing the maps from both series, that would put Bevlin's hut in/right outside of Sull territory.

Where are the Sull during Words?

pangie:

As far as I know, Words takes place only a few years before SoS. So the Sull would be doing what they are doing in SoS I imagine. Wasn't far enough back, in the times where they were more spread out. Unless I've mistaken your question about the Sull.

Unguru, I guess that makes sense. I don't have any of the Sword books with me at the moment to refer back to but I'm pretty sure that when Baralis was captured he was escaping with Crope through a northern mountain range, presumably shortly after Jack burnt him to a crisp. So the passage of time between series doesn't seem to be more than a decade.
