Dead Space

I'm considering getting EA's new game Dead Space for the PlayStation 3. Anyone played this yet?

In space, no one can hear you scream. On this board, no one has played this game.

Actually, I stumbled across a review of this very title over at Ars Technica (highbrow tech-site). Although never easily impressed, they really liked it.

I say buy... but don't play it alone (cue spooky noises).

Mmmm, EA. Big, Evil company. Can't say I'm too impressed with many of their games.

What I would like to ask is what the PS3 is like? I've metamorphasised into more of a pc gamer over the last few years, but I still harbour vague notions of getting another console. Especially if there's another Final Fantasy game coming out.

Also, has anyone played "Shadows of the Colossus" on PS2? This is meant to be a truly breathtaking game- some people have said it verges on art. It's also a game that virtually no one has played lol- so if anyone has, I'd love to know what you think...

I have to back R_P here. EA, bloomin vultures, bought out Westwood studios and then promptly, and I mean promptly, killed one of the best MMORPG to date - Earth and Beyond. (I'm reaching for my tissues here)

I really wanted to play Fable II however, but it was only released to xbox. hmpht... So still playing eq2, still looking for something different myself.

I've not played Dead Space, but I did just buy Red Alert 3, for the PC, which is an EA game. Before buying it, I read a couple dozen articles online, checked what pcgamer magazine had to say, and asked one of the IT guys, Robb, at work. Robb said that Command and Conquer used to be a great game, right up until EA got ahold of it and its been a flat-liner since.

long story short, I bought it, took it home, fired it up and you can't zoom out enough! Big maps and you're watching it like you're in a helicopter that can't fly higher than 200 feet off the ground. grrrr

Its been almost 3 months since I stopped playing world of warcraft, and I was looking for a low key gaming outlet in RA3. I may end up digging through a box and looking for an old copy of Warcraft 2 or 3.

No, i dont think it was EA's fault regarding E&B, that game was just not very good, especially in light of EVE Online.

Fable II i didnt play personally, but both of my roomies have, they both enjoyed it, although apparently the main storyline is pretty short.

As for Dead Space, i havent heard much about it. I'd check out http://www.metacritic.com/games/platfor ... ad%20space, and probably read some of the reviews from that site, should give you a pretty good idea of what you may or may not be getting into.

It got a cumulative score of 88, which is actually extremely good. Most of the games that people consider the best of all time are in the low 90's, high 80's is a very good score.

I picked it up and beat Dead Space about 2 weeks ago. It is a great game. The storytelling is solid for a game and the interactive nature of it can really pull you in. I beat it in a good 10 hours, so it is not an incredibly long game however, though it does offer some replay value...

It is very creepy and grotesque game. So if you are squeemish or jumpy it might not be the game for you... My wife could hardly watch it. I however, enjoy the stuff obviously and highly recommend it to others who do as well.

Another game that is definitely worth trying out is Fallout 3. Great story and world. A very unique experience and highly addicting.

I would have to disagree with you there. I loved Earth and Beyond. Loved the way you could fly around in your ship, or walk around the space stations. Eve just had a flat avatar. Loved the storyline. The graphics were slightly primitive I admit, where as EVE has awesome graphics. Also in EVE it just seemed to take an awfully long time to get things done. E&B had faster game play, which was great for time-poor people. All in all I can honestly say I enjoyed E&B far more than EVE. I do realize however that I am probably in the minority there.

As for EA. Once they acquired Westwood, they did nothing for the game. No marketing, no upgrades to the game itself or anything regarding the game. It became blatantly clear that they never intended to continue with it. Which was a great shame for big fans such as myself.

Have you read anything on Jumpgate II? I haven't actually looked at jumpgate itself, but I have heard Jumpgate II is going to be quite E&B orientated.

I'll agree with you that conceptially it was an excellent idea. The game *could* have been excellent, it had a great framework, but just didnt deliver. It was like reading only a few chapters of Baker's Boy and then finding yourself turning to a blank page, and the rest of the book is just blank pages. It was kind of like Age of Conan in that respect. Very ambitious, but failed to deliver.

Never the less, to each their own ;-).

As for Jumpgate II, i hadn't actually even heard of the original, much less the sequel. I'll have to check it out. EVE is fun and all as a casual game, but the people just seem to have this tendency towards being, for lack of a better word, pricks. Having a world where you can trust literally no one gets old pretty quick.

Ive heard good things about Dead Space but have not played it.

in regards to EA, at least they have done well so far with Warhammer Online, but mostly because they are letting Mythic run it and not interfering.

Have not played the game yet, though have read gamespots reviews and it has seemed great from the get go. Looks like sci-fi's answer to resident evil, witch I have enjoyed tremendously! And as is that isn't sci-fi enough already! Ha! :P In fact the new resident evil, what is it? 5? just came outand is also slated to be lots-o-fun!!! Awww, what to play next... Sigh*

I say, hurl. If you blow chunks and she comes back, she's yours.

Oh wait. I meant .. "I say GO FOR IT."

Heh heh.

Also, for best creepiest space game ever, System Shock 2. SHODAN for the major scary win.
Death smiled as she withdrew. Kill an army for me, Raif Sevrance. Any less and I just might call you back.
